Small Motors?

Postby Fishook » Fri Jan 15, 2010 12:33 pm

Hi All.
First post here looking for some info that I cant fined on F&G wed site. If I was to bring down my small 12 boat on the Ferry from Whittier to fish the Situk, is a small kicker allowed on the river from 9 mile Bridge down to the pull out ????

O.K just got of the phone with F&G in Yakutat asking him about motor restriction, He said there is one for guides but not for the general public,, So my next Question is….. Has anyone ran a Coleman Scanoe with a small kicker on the Situk? Can it be done with all the sweepers that river as to offer.

That could be a handfull if you don't know the river, there are some very narrow passages cut by Bob and Frank in the spring for boat passage but it should be OK.

Good Luck

I know they do it with drift boats from 9 mile down. There is a lot shallow water in places and some very tight spots. I have seen boats with jet pumps up a few miles but a prop boy I don't know for sure?? I have seen prop boats go up a ways from the lower landing also on high tides. I think it would be a real gamble. For sure bring a few extra sheer pins. For the cost of shipping a boat you may be able to just hire a guide??? Good luck if you do it and let us know how it goes.

Kudos to the observation about extra shear pins, perhaps even a prop. To the other cautions for a canoe I would wear your life jacket or stay home.

Its doable if you have experience in tight quick manuvers. A full size drift boat! went over last year with an experienced guide however.
Many folks just use an elecrtic motor to get them through the boring parts?

the question isn't if you can run a small boat with motor down the situk, but why would you? the situk is a small river, boats with motors are a significant disturbance to both fish (especially if you're trying to catch them) and other anglers. there needs to be less motor use on the situk, a few guides who know the river and know how to run it without causing too much disturbance is ok, but in the past few years there have been more and more visiting anglers using small boats to trudge up and down the river... this is a problem. paddle it in a canoe, row it in a drift boat, or walk... there is a ton of good fishing water within a couple miles of 9 mile bridge or the lower landing.

Look me and my friends fish it as early as anyone. We ship rafts down and pay afew locals gas money to help us with ferrying. You are better off with a raft and a shuttle than you are with a motor. There are afew places off the top of my head that even if you made it up to them, without being on step you arent going to make it. Simply put why fight the flow, bridge to landing is a simple enough trip with afew obsticals along the way. I know of three motors a doctor there had a private boat and Bob and the other guide. To me bringing a motor to that river...... is like dirty fisherman going to this pristine environment to use jigs with sent baits... its just wrong. ~Steve

I'm with fishlive and alakan guy. Leave the motor behind please. It's a small river. You can't not mess up other peoples fishing.
